Working Together to Heal the Wounds of Childhood Trauma
Download the brochure (PDF)
If you work with traumatized children and families facing complex challenges and
overwhelming obstacles to stability, then you are likely to have more questions
than answers. Our usual ways of thinking about mental health are of limited value
when problems are embedded within generations of abuse and neglect, family dysfunction,
poverty and reactive living.
The Problem to Solution workshop series brings you state of the art
knowledge about trauma and how it changes lives, and solutions based in over 30 years
of clinical experience with children and families struggling to maintain equilibrium on
uneven, shaky ground.
Problem to Solution workshops are designed for professionals who work with
children and families in a variety of settings: DFCS, schools, hospitals and clinics,
courts, group homes, social service agencies, family preservation agencies, adoption
agencies, and clinical practice. The workshops are grounded in the belief that a shared
understanding of the problems of troubled children and their families and a shared vision
of the solutions will enable us to provide the most effective, trauma sensitive services
to those most in need.
The objectives of the Problem to Solution workshops are to:
- Increase participants’ "trauma sensitivity"
- Enhance participants’ awareness and skills as agents of change
- Help participants view children through the dual lenses of trauma and developmental stages
- Give participants a framework for working with children and families that is sensitive
to their roles in the social service network
- Provide practical tools for assessment and intervention
- Care for the caregiver: stress management and burn-out prevention
Each workshop in the Problem to Solution series addresses a question that you have
likely asked many times. We explore the complexity of each question and arrive at a broader
understanding than we started out with. Using the trauma and developmental lenses to give us
a clearer view of perplexing questions, we are then ready to find innovative and effective
solutions that are tailored to the needs of each child and family and are sensitive to the
ways in which the challenges of working with troubled children shows up in your professional life.
